Deceased Name: Berthold Jackson Brody

Berthold ""Steve'' Jackson Brody, 88, of Duluth passed away Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008 in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on Oct. 16, 1919 to Isaac and Doris Brody. The Brody family moved to Duluth when Steve was a young child. He was a Central High School graduate, and later received his Bachelor's degree from University of Minnesota - Duluth. Steve was a Sergeant with the United States Army serving during World War II. In June of 1938, Steve began his career in banking with what is now Wells Fargo Bank. He starting in basic operations with the bank, and at his time of retirement in 1984, was a Vice President. After one month of retirement, Steve returned to the bank and continued his employment until 1994. He is noted to be one of the longest working employees on record. On July 14, 1962, he married Marjorie ""Joan'' Wakefield in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Duluth. He and Joan were members of both Temple Israel and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Together, they enjoyed traveling throughout many countries. They were active in the University for Seniors. Steve was a man who lived with integrity, simplicity and humility; but showed fierce devotion to his wife Joan and her family. He was a selfless man, and it was never ""about him.'' Joan's family is honored to have had Steve for their uncle and friend. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joan (2000); nephew, Christopher Bruce Wakefield (2008), brother-in-law, Milton Wakefield; and a cousin, Jean Thompson. Steve is survived by his nieces and nephews, David Wakefield of Duluth, Pam (Thomas) Eden of Duluth, Candy (Larry) Davis of Goose Creek, S.C. and Stephen (Carol) Wakefield of Duluth; sister-in-law, Carol Wakefield; many other caring nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Shirley ""Bubbles'' Sigler. GRAVESIDE SERVICE:11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 at Temple Emanuel Cemetery, located at approximately 4400 Woodland Ave. Rabbi Amy Bernstein officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. A time for sharing memories and refreshment will follow at Mount Royal Pines III, 50 East St. Marie St. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the charity of choice.
